چکیده
Abstract We study whether unemployment duration dependence—the negative effect of a current spell on an individual's employment probability—varies with labor market experience. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey Youth and Current Population Survey, we show that although there is dependence for experienced workers, it mostly absent new entrants to force. This difference suggests structural forces in addition ex ante heterogeneity job‐finding probabilities dynamic selection may drive dependence. We incorporate reference-dependent worker behavior into a search-matching model of the labor market, in which firms have all the bargaining power and productivity follows a log-linear AR(1) process. Motivated by Akerlof (1982) and Bewley (1999), we assume that existing workers’ output falls stochastically from its normal level when their wage falls below a "reference point", which (following Kő...

This paper studies “duration dependence”—the probability that a longer unemployment spell reduces a worker’s job opportunities —by sending fictitious resumes to real job postings across the U.S. We randomly manipulate the length of the current unemployment spell on each fictitious resume, and we track callbacks for interviews for all submissions. Preliminary results from the ongoing field exper...
